Dangerous Trends: Prologue

This particular column is not for the faint of heart, in some senses of the word. Rather, it is designed Specifically for those with a faint heart, and who may not have a voice as loud or as boisterous as some. What this column is, and I refuse to use the word Blog, as it, as a word, sounds roughly akin to the sound one makes while vomiting, is a designation of some of the more sordid and problematic trends, as the title implies, that have been spreading like wildfire across the Society, while attempting to dispel the excuses made by these people as strongly and as potently as possible.

In this column, I welcome input of a constructive nature, however, I don't necessarily promise that I will take it to heart. 90% of the subject matter that I intend to write upon is a subject that I have spent years researching in several different kingdoms across the Known World. These are things that have been taking a stronger and stronger rooting, much like the tendrils of Internet Trolling, and exist for much the same reasons, specifically, for people to attempt to assert their superiority over others in a setting of community, one wherein we are ALL equals, regardless of the pointiness of our hats, or the colors of our belts, or even the number of years we've been playing the game. At the end of the day, when the tents are being packed up, you and "His Honorable Lordship Joe Schmoe" are just the same, and really, even when the tents are up and the swords are out, you "follow" their rule only because you want to, and the moment you don't, you won't. It's really not that difficult to comprehend, and yet, so many seem to push this social disparity, not even just by royalty, but by just about anyone else under the sun, whether it be the knighthood complaining about the authenticity of a new person's armor, or a laurel committing what amounts to sexual harassment by lifting the skirts of a passerby to check whether or not their hems are period-accurate. It even goes so far as those who will gladly sacrifice safety, whether it be theirs or those around them, to push the authenticity envelope just a bit further, from poorly constructed items(Modern materials exist for a reason), to incredibly questionable practices by medical staff("You're vomiting and have been drinking a lot of alcohol... Hmm... let's work on your Chakras for a bit..." I wish I were making this up.), or even for those who will gladly bring back old social inequities and genderist and racist commentary because "It was tolerated in the period..."

Altogether, the list of above trends is a sickening one, and this column, again, exists to dissect each one, and to serve as a cautionary tale to those that would attempt to perpetuate those disgusting trends, in that there are many who are more than willing to call you out on it.
