When my son was born it soon became apparent that nursing in SCA garb was not a simple matter. Since my garb didn't open in the front it meant taking my entire dress off to nurse. Since the idea of doing this was extremely inconvenient and not entirely appropriate I began to brainstorm for ideas to making "nursing garb."
I am not much for sewing but I do sew my own garb, as such I decided it had to be something I would actually want to wear past nursing. I came up with a simple but effective dress. I am not going to do a pattern here, it's simply an idea that can be adapted to your preferred outfit.
I chose a pattern that had a centre seam up to the neckline. I sewed the seam to about the level of my navel. I pinned back the rest of the seam as if I was hemming it for the neck opening. Instead of hemming I sewed a series of small hooks along that edge slightly inside so they were invisible. That's it! It was so easy!
Once I am done nursing I am going to pick the stitches out of the hooks, sew the seam and finish hemming the neck line! A super simple solution in which I didn't have to completely redesign clothing and is adaptable to many types of garb!
