It is now approaching the Summer and with it, the hotter temps that I do not handle very well.  So I am addressing this by creating some Elizabethans from Linen this year.

Hello so now that you have taken the time to check out what others are wearing in the SCA, checked out portraits, you have made a cut down the ages and now you are ready to go to the next step: Your Budget! I know, but being firstly in the SCA you have so much to get so I always like to discuss how you are going to pay for this without owing the National Debt on Credit Cards.

Budget

There are 3 basic areas when you want to create or gain something they are;MoneyTimeEffort

Modern Fabrics with Renaissance Esthetics

It can be difficult to find appropriate fabrics to make your outfits not only feel authentic and also not make them cookie cutter like the person next to you. The first thing I am going to tell you is, this takes time effort and research, once you know what to look for then you can make an educated choice as to what fabrics we can find today. I am also going to mention that the time period we are looking at had many more textures in natural fibers than we have today.  The advent of synthetic...

Terminology it essential in knowing exactly what you are looking for to wear if you want to get the correct or authentic 'look'.  Without looking like a cookie cutter, we can create clothing of the period using period terminology , so that we will pay it forward and the people who follow us will use the correct terms.

So are Fortune Michelgrove a lovely person in 1570 England, and you are going to Court!  This is exciting as your family will be able to use the connections you meet to help...

Welcome to the SCA, now what?

When anyone begins in the SCA, we all have to figure out well who we are, again within a time frame.  While there are some sites online in which you can pick clothing from, they are expensive and well you just can't walk into your local Sears and ask for 13th Century Norman attire.   So here are some time periods and places to help you figure out what you need or would like to aspire to in the SCA. Also because we wear pretty heartily the clothing within...

First off I want to apologize for a lack of bloggage these last couple weeks...What with the holidays, and starting a new job, and well I was waiting to gather the needed materials for my next project, there hasn't been much to blog about.

After finishing the niece's dress I decided I wanted to do something more fancier for myself. I am currently still deciding my persona but am leaning towards an early tudor persona...So having looked up various sites with pictures and patterns and well a...

Ok wow has this dress been a learning experience. We last left off with me crumpling it up and throwing a fit.

I took a break from working on it and then took it to the weekly Shire sewing night to get the advice from the more seasoned sewers in our group. I pointed out the things I was having issues with and they helped me work through the issues and find ways to get by with the dress.

We managed in adding a few darts in the back and shoulders so that the dress fits her now and as she...

A Garb Odyssey

When deciding what kind of persona I wanted to do I first looked at the garb. There were a few places that I was interested in a few time periods but I just wasn't sure. Then I remembered that I was going to be the one making the garb. Oh boy. That meant I needed something relatively easy.

So I went Anglo Saxon. It was easy and I liked it. I found a name and I found the era. Now all I needed to do was make the garb. First I did research. I'm not a garb nazi but I thought that after five...

Sorry for not posting often. Your about to hear why.

So during construction of said dress somehow the set backs highly frusterated me and I had to bunch it up, throw it into a pile while blurting out bad words and take a break.

First somehow managed to put panels on wrong so ripped seems and redid. Then I gathered the skirt and attached to the bodice sewing the three seam lines it called for and then having niece try it on. My sister noticed an error and brought it to my attention. Somehow...

Aveline Sews... for a person, not a hanger.
Written by Lady Aveline femme Marc

People are not shaped like hangers.  Luckily for us, huh?  This is why some shirts or dresses will look horrible when strung on a hanger, but look great when worn.  You need the curves that come with a human body to fill out a garment and make it look good.  This is why hemming a dress while it’s hanging on a hanger just will not work.  Or why lining up buttons to go up the back of a dress will get you uneven tension through the body once the dress is put on.

 This also explains why...
