Good day all gentles,

First let me say that I was overwhelmed by the response to my first entry.  It makes it so much easier to write when you have people who are reading.

 Now onward to part...

Fall and Festivities - The Adventures of an SCA Lass

October....finally!

I immensely enjoyed all the responses from my last posting.  I love to hear other's thoughts and feelings on issues of importance or unimportance!  The fall has kicked off in my area with a bit of chilly weather which I am enjoying immensely.  The past week has been spent preparing for harvest festivals and the like and the leaves are starting to change a lovely color.

I had planted a garden this year, and my son and I cultivated typical crops from the 15th century...

I am ready for Henry VIII's Revels!

One of my dreams when it comes to my love for Renaissance is to learn how to dance Renaissance Dances. Last Friday was my first Renaissance Dance with the Shire and it was absolutely fantastic!

I had a great time undertaking a goal I've had for a while - to eventually master the art of Renaissance Dance (which is something my Persona will master), and the overall experience (which was also my very first SCA activity) was a lot of fun!

The Shire members I met were very welcoming and helpful...

Easy Peasy Nursing Garb

Written by Grainne Donnghal

When my son was born it soon became apparent that nursing in SCA garb was not a simple matter.  Since my garb didn't open in the front it meant taking my entire dress off to nurse.  Since the idea of doing this was extremely inconvenient and not entirely appropriate I began to brainstorm for ideas to making "nursing garb."

I am not much for sewing but I do sew my own garb, as such I decided it had to be something I would actually want to wear past nursing.  I came up with a simple...

Aveline Sews... A Cape and Kirtle (Part 1)

My mother-in-law (Anna) has a problem.  At every event she goes to, she ends up freezing... at least at night.  She has a cloak, but it's too heavy and one of the last times she wore it, she actually popped her shoulder trying to put it on!  It also does not have a defined neck - the hood and cape are one uncut piece of fabric.  So, she has a hard time keeping the cloak on her shoulders.  She's asked me to help her make a lighter weight, but still warm cape.  This is the patter she...

All Sheep Are Not Created Equal

Written by Grainne Donnghal

There are hundreds of sheep breeds across the globe.  Each one has it’s own unique characteristics.  Sheep breeding, like so many other domesticated animals changes over time.  There is a type of created evolution that takes place.  As such, older breeds are often lost while newer breeds take the forefront.  In addition, there are limitations to what sheep are available regionally.  For example, in Western Canada where I live, I can find Shetland and Icelandic, but Blue Faced...

Ok first let me apologize for a two day no blog...Our net out here kinda blows at times...However due to the absence of a great site here and the farkle game on facebook, I have managed to begin battling the "princess dress" so to recap the progress....And here we go....

After getting the pattern pieces cut and folded in a nice neat pile that I could work on when I had the time turned it to a "nope gotta do it now" type thing...Neice has been super stoked that she is getting her dress made...

Bringing Food to an Event

I am fairly new to the SCA and so love being part of such an interesting and diverse group!  One of the best parts (in my opinion) of the SCA is events.  I love meeting new people and I love that we are all there for a common purpose and such, almost everybody is welcoming and willing to talk.  I noticed that there seems to be a lot of mundane food at events and was a little dissapointed by this, so I thought I would throw out some of my suggestions for easy medieval style food to bring to...

Building a Kingdom From Straw: A Newbie's Guide to Living the Dream on the Cheap

Good day all gentles,

When I first entered the game two years ago, the first thing I was told was that I would have to be putting a lot of money into it to play the game the way it should be played-- This frightened me.  At the time I was a 23 year old college student with a seasonal job (now I am a 25 year old college student with a seasonal job AND a wedding to pay for) and thought to myself, self I thought there's no way I can take on this hobby, I don't have enough money for ramen on a...

Ok back around March I believe our Shire was hosting an event called Haire Affaire....It was the first event that I was co-autocrating and I wanted to make something new so I started to sew a Viking apron dress....

We had just moved into my sisters house due to financial problems, and so my niece was ever present shyly and sometimes noisily watching...She is six after all and hardly can sit still or be silent...

So while I was working on my garb she smies with full dimples and says, "Oh I...
