Færeyinga Saga

Written by Kristel Catterton

A particular ballad of interest is Sigmundskvæði, or the ”heroic ballad of Sigmund,” primarily because it has a counterpart saga in Icelandic. Though not much is known about the Faroese...

History of Faroese Song and Dance

Written by Kristel Catterton

Very few documents exist from the previous millenium, therefore little is known about the history of the Faroe Islands prior to the second World War (at which point they were being used as a NATO base). Documents that do exist, however, are chain songs. Chain songs are ballads, which are defined as ”. . . a poem meant for singing, quite impersonal in manner, narrative in material, probably connect in its origins with the communal dance, but submitted to a process of oral tradition among...

An Introduction to the Faroe Islands

Written by Kristel Catterton

The Faroe Islands, a remote archipelago of eighteen islands northwest of Scotland, are somewhat of a terra incognita. That is, they are little known to most of the world and are considered to be one of the last unspoiled places of Europe. Though the specifics of first settlement are not fully known, most sources state that the islands were initially settled by Irish monks between 600 and 800 AD. One writing exists from that time; a monk named Dicuil visited the islands while writing the Liber...

Faroese Naming History

Written by Miriam Gabrielis

In looking for names for our daughter (due in May), I couldn't help but to look for SCA-period names as well. Both Olaf's and my personae are Faroese, roughly 1000 AD, and the usual places I have looked for names (e.g. The Academy of St. Gabriel) have little information.

I did find one article there, though, that pointed me in the right direction: A Very Brief History of the Scandinavian Languages, by Talan Gwynek. Common Scandinavian was the primary North Germanic language across northern...

The Hapsburg Dress: By Elena de Braci

First off I want to apologize for a lack of bloggage these last couple weeks...What with the holidays, and starting a new job, and well I was waiting to gather the needed materials for my next project, there hasn't been much to blog about.

After finishing the niece's dress I decided I wanted to do something more fancier for myself. I am currently still deciding my persona but am leaning towards an early tudor persona...So having looked up various sites with pictures and patterns and well a...

A Spinning Wheel Isn't a Bad Thing!

Written by Grainne Donnghal

One of the things I love about the SCA is that there are handspinners everywhere!  Every event I have been to include people that are spinning away on a variety of drop spindles with all kinds of fibres.  As with every craft in the SCA there are purists who strive to replicate medieval times as closely as possible.  This is a laudable goal and I love seeing someone spinning with a handmade spindle using fibre processed in a traditional manner.  These people are to be admired. ...

Dangerous Trends: The Importance of Image part II

Written by Aindrias Mac-Solamh

As one might find while reading over my previous posts, there is a certain theme across all of them, wherein you will find a great number of people in the Society who are absolutely convinced that they are better than you are, those who will work feverishly towards stepping on the heads of everyone around them until they get their name on a fancy piece of paper, then immediately drop off the face of the planet, claiming their esteem in regards to that specific little gem for the rest of their...

In honor of Fall: A Cordial

So with the latest sewing project finished and still gathering stuff for the next major sewing project. (thats not including the rapier armor and second sideless surrcoat).

I wanted something to do for now until I get back to sewing.

With so many of my shire members into brewing/vinting I decided to try my hand at it as well but until I get all the equipment gathered I decided to start working on more cordials.

Last year I made a blueberry that everyone loved (as a matter of fact it was...

Dangerous Trends: Authenticity over Community

Written by Aindrias Mac-Solamh

One can easily surmise by reading through much of the period literature that there was a certain emphasis on the separation of classes, and that in the period, one could easily imagine that there was quite a disparity among different cultures, even different genders, social standings, religious upbringings, and many more things. In a sharp contrast, our modern society has given way to a point of relative tolerance, and while we're not quite there yet, we've certainly made some progress in the...

Its finally done: A conclusion by Elena de Braci

Written by Elena De Braci

Ok wow has this dress been a learning experience. We last left off with me crumpling it up and throwing a fit.

I took a break from working on it and then took it to the weekly Shire sewing night to get the advice from the more seasoned sewers in our group. I pointed out the things I was having issues with and they helped me work through the issues and find ways to get by with the dress.

We managed in adding a few darts in the back and shoulders so that the dress fits her now and as she...
